Nasolabial folds are the lines that run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Although sometimes referred to more lightheartedly as “smile lines,” they are actually among the most disliked by patients. This is because, even though they are related to facial expression and smiling, they tend to give the face a constantly tired or aged appearance.

The treatment approach depends on the depth of the fold. In younger patients, or when the lines are less pronounced, a medium-density filler injected beneath the wrinkle may be enough to smooth the area. However, in the case of deeper lines—true nasolabial folds—the issue is often caused by the gradual downward descent of the cheek and zygomatic area. These cases require a combined approach: first, treating the cheekbone area to lift and reduce the weight on the fold, and then, if needed, enhancing the procedure with a direct injection into the line itself.
